Objective Hillman - WN17 Against the Assaults of the 1st Suffolk - 6–7 June 1944

On 6 June at dawn, the Allied forces launched the gigantic Operation Overlord, aimed at landing on the Normandy coast to liberate Europe from Hitler's yoke. On Sword Beach, in the Queen and Red sectors, the men of the 1st Battalion, Suffolk Regiment, set foot on the sands of Colleville-Montgomery. Their objective: to secure the coast and storm the site designated by the code name Hillman.

For nearly two days, these men would advance slowly towards their objective, meeting resistance from soldiers commanded by Oberst Ludwig Krug; on both sides, men would lose their lives, each convinced they were fighting for a just cause.

Through the testimonies of British veterans, but also through the account of Gefreiter Hans Sauer and the recovered notes of Hauptmann Kutz, relive almost hour by hour, through this book, the landing, the advance and the capture of the Hillman and Morris sites; but also the German defensive organisation, and the experience of those who found themselves encircled and then taken prisoner.
