The battle of Montrevel-Malafretaz in the Ain on 3 September 1944 witnessed the final engagements following the Provence Landings, as part of a blocking manoeuvre against the retreating German 19th Army. For 11 hours, 150 Americans of the 117th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron held off nearly 3,000 Germans of the 11th Panzer Division.

Overwhelmed by sheer numbers, the GIs were ultimately forced to surrender, giving rise after the war to a painful controversy over their fighting worth.

This book sets the record straight about their sacrifice.

Both authors live in the Rhône-Alpes region and share a passion for local history. Bruno Cavillon lives just a few kilometres from Montrevel, where the battle took place; Jean-Marie Gillet is originally from Sault-Brénaz, which Troop C of the 117th Cavalry liberated on 31 August 1944. Deeply committed to the duty of remembrance, both are active members of 117th Cavalry veterans' associations.
