Commando Kieffer - The French Land in Normandy, 6 June 1944
On Tuesday 6 June 1944, 130,000 Allied soldiers landed in Normandy. Among them, 177 Frenchmen.
While the figure may seem negligible, the symbolic significance is immense.

These men who had refused Nazi occupation were returning to their native soil, weapons in hand, some of them four years after having left it. They belonged to the commandos, that elite corps created by
Churchill following the costly evacuation of Dunkirk.
At their head, Philippe Kieffer, a banker over 40 years of age, whose enthusiasm and determination had
finally convinced the British to accept Frenchmen within their assault troops.
But the contribution of the «commando Kieffer» to the success of Operation Overlord cannot be reduced
to mere symbolism. On D-Day, the French green berets would achieve, at the cost of heavy casualties, all of their
objectives, most notably the capture of the Ouistreham casino, transformed by the Germans into a heavily fortified bunker.
