The Breakout from the Bocage focuses on the three months following the successful invasion of France: the Battle of Normandy. The book opens with the advance through the Cotentin Peninsula and the capture of Cherbourg. It describes the bogging down in the Norman bocage and the war of attrition around Caen. Operation Cobra broke through the German lines, and Patton's Third Army encircled what remained of the German forces before pushing on into Brittany.

Through texts, aerial photographs, maps and diagrams — many created specifically for this book — authors Leo Marriott, Simon and George Forty explain and interpret the full complexity of the Battle of Normandy.
