After two months of fierce fighting in Normandy, the Canadians of the 7th Brigade found themselves engaged in the Falaise-Chambois pocket. Their mission: to prevent the thousands of encircled German soldiers from escaping.

They would hold their positions firmly, but many of the enemy managed to escape the trap. They then set off in pursuit, giving them no respite. They reached Orbec, Bernay, Brionne, then Elbeuf, despite the desperate fighting by their opponents and the difficulties encountered moving along roads clogged with vehicles of every kind.

They crossed the Seine and the pursuit continued towards Rouen. Their advance was slowed by numerous enemy counter-attacks, until they finally reached the city, which had been evacuated by the German army. They then handed the city over to the 9th Canadian Infantry Brigade, as an order had just come down: « Drive due north towards Neufchâtel ».
