Ursula Pacaud-Meindl composes here a mosaic of a turbulent era lived in Germany and in France. She bases her account on two exceptional destinies: that of her father — Eugene Meindl, the celebrated and renowned German general and commander of the II. Fallschirmjäger-Korps — and her own. Ursula arrived in France in 1947, under contract with the Direction des Constructions et Armes Navales. Her department, specialising in the identification of radiated underwater noise from vessels, achieved international renown. In recognition of her work, she was appointed Chevalier de l'Ordre National du Mérite in 1981. She was presented with the Submariner's badge struck with a sword in 1982, and became Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur in 1987.

The author uses these two destinies as a guiding thread to bear witness to the motivations of her generation, to life in Germany and, later, in France. She guides the reader through key periods of the 20th century.

Born in 1922 in Ulm, Ursula Meindl spent her youth in a Germany living under Hitler's authority before coming to France in the difficult circumstances of the post-war years.


This book, published by Didier Lodieu, is a companion to his two books on the Fallschirmjäger. You will find previously unpublished documents and photographs on the General der Fallschirmjägertruppen. At the age of 97, Madame Ursula authorised Didier to publish her memoirs following the release of "Le sacrifice des Fallschirmjäger".
