Through the posthumous publication of his field notebooks, Colonel Sassi offers an exceptional testimony that reveals the humanity of an unyielding, determined soldier — one who also experienced moments of doubt and even despair when confronted with waiting, irresolution, or the insanity of the world around him. In a vivid and forceful literary style, from the depths of the Saharan desert to the vastness of the Indochinese jungle and the Algerian djebel, Jean Sassi proves once again that the greatest warriors can also be the most humane. Born in 1917, Colonel Jean Sassi, Commander of the Légion d'honneur, was decorated with thirteen war citations, including five foreign ones. In 2008, a few months before his death, he had confided in journalist Jean-Louis Tremblais to reveal, in the work Opérations spéciales, 20 ans de guerres secrètes, his extraordinary career within the Jedburghs, Force 136, and as a leader of indigenous maquis groups in Indochina. An undisputed specialist in counter-revolutionary and unconventional warfare, Colonel Sassi was a former honorary president of the Association nationale des anciens du 11e Choc.
