THE NATZWEILER-STRUTHOF CAMP
Between 1941 and 1945, Alsace, annexed to the Third Reich, saw the establishment of one of the deadliest concentration camps of the Second World War: KL-Natzweiler. Of the 52,000 individuals who passed through it, more than 20,000 never returned, victims of terrifying detention conditions, devastating scientific experiments and merciless "death marches".
Drawing on unpublished archives and testimonies, Robert Steegmann offers a masterly study of this little-known camp. An instrument of violent repressive policy and a reservoir of labour for German industry, it obeyed the relentless logic of the concentration camp machinery that operated on both sides of the Rhine.
Through the arrivals and departures, the forced labour, the punishments and the medical experiments, it is the men — victims or docile agents of barbarism — who lie at the heart of this book. Their fates are those of the history of Nazi barbarism.
A doctor of history, Robert Steegmann is a professor of contemporary history in preparatory classes in Strasbourg. A member of the scientific council of the European Centre of the Deported Resistance Fighter, he has notably published Struthof. Le KL-Natzweiler et ses kommandos (La Nuée bleue, 2005).
