Hitler, who overcame his fear of flying to make intensive use of it from the presidential election of 1932 onward, never wanted any pilot other than Hans Baur. A fighter pilot during the Great War, a pioneer of military airmail and one of the founders of Lufthansa in 1926 — in whose service he tested numerous aircraft models and opened new routes, notably across the Alps — Baur was by then a legend of the heroic age of aviation.

Constantly at Hitler's side, he was the privileged witness to every stage of the dictator's life, right up to the final day in the Führerbunker in Berlin.

A familiar figure at the Berghof, sharing all the Führer's meals, attending his major appointments and even, on occasion, deputising for him, Baur was far more than a mere pilot: a Nazi from 1926, SS Oberführer in 1934, SS Brigadeführer in 1941 — he who had begun as pilot of "Luftwaffe One", Hitler's private aircraft, found himself in command of a fleet of more than forty planes.

Held prisoner for ten long years by the Soviets — who were determined to make him confess that Hitler had not died but had fled by plane under his command — he had to wait until 1956 to publish his Memoirs, translated into French the following year under the title J'étais le pilote de Hitler and reissued here for the first time with an illuminating introduction and a substantial critical apparatus by Claude Quétel.
