Published in October 2013 by éditions ETAI, " Les Généraux Français de 1940" retraces the exceptional careers of the 24 generals and senior army commanders who held major commands between May and June 1940 — ranging from the commander-in-chief to army commanders, theatre and army group commanders, the chief of staff and the major-general of the armies.

Maxime Weygand, Maurice Gamelin, Alphonse Georges and Henri Giraud all feature in this fine collection of biographies, as do the greatest names among the elite of the French Army of the period: Gaston Billotte, André Georges Corap, Aimé Doumenc, Pierre Héring, René Olry and André-Gaston Prételat, among others.

The work is co-written by François de Lannoy, Doctor of History and author of numerous works on the Second World War — including "Les Maréchaux du Reich", published by ETAI — and Max Schiavon, likewise a Doctor of History, specialist in military elites and former official at the Ministry of Defence.

Unique of its kind and illustrated with 300 photographs, the majority previously unpublished, "Les Généraux Français de 1940" is drawn from private and public archives, constituting a magnificent and essential body of documentation for reliving and better understanding the "disaster" of 1940: nearly two million prisoners, entire divisions annihilated with their equipment lost, and more than half of national territory overrun by the German Army, the Wehrmacht.
