Yet the RAF was very much present, and its pilots performed remarkable feats, even as they were still practising obsolete tactics against opponents who already had the benefit of successful campaigns against the Poles, the Belgians and the Dutch. The unwavering commitment of the Royal Air Force at Dunkirk, in support of both the re-embarkation of British troops and that of French troops, made it possible to avert a total defeat.
