While many of them perished or were taken prisoner in the course of their duty, a few were not only fortunate enough to survive, but above all to escape capture. From these escapes were born extraordinary human adventures, made possible by the help of the local population — itself exposed to the blind repression of the occupier, as well as to the bombs and gunfire of the very men it would go on to shelter once they had come down to earth.

From the detailed account of the mission that would bring about their fall in enemy territory to their eventual liberation, this book reconstructs the odyssey of several American pilots and crews who lived through such adventures.

Airmen who crossed the paths of exceptional men and women from the Manche département during their escapes — people whose lives were changed, if not transformed, by those encounters. A somewhat more intimate facet of the history of the Second World War, one that sheds light on the still too little-known role played by local civilians in the Manche who sheltered these airmen on the run, and restores a measure of humanity to a conflict that would crush so many lives.
