PAVIA 1525 – Francis I's Italian Failure
" Of all things, nothing has remained to me but honour and my life ": his troops heavily defeated, Francis I was taken prisoner at Pavia.
An account of the defeat that came close to carrying away the kingdom of France. Pavia was an event with European repercussions. The four-month siege of the Lombard city and the battle itself pitted thousands of combatants of diverse origins against one another, gathered here in the service of the King of France, the Emperor and the Duke of Milan.
But it is of course in France that this tragic episode of the Italian Wars had the greatest resonance: the army was destroyed, the peninsula lost, King Francis I captured by his mortal enemy, Emperor Charles V. It was the worst French defeat since Agincourt, during the Hundred Years' War!
After a year of humiliating captivity in Madrid, the king would spend his life attempting to overcome this stinging defeat.
Julien Guinand, a brilliant academic specialising in the sixteenth century, immerses himself as close as possible to the fighting, which he brings to life magnificently. The book challenges received ideas about the event, particularly regarding the overestimated role of artillery and the protagonists' art of war. As with all works in the " Champs de bataille " collection, the reader can rely on a colour map section and a precise order of battle.
