Recounting the history of the D-Day ports by relating events as they are commonly recorded does not allow for a full understanding of the overall arrangements established by General Morgan to carry out Operation Overlord, whose objective was the final collapse of the Reich. I

It clearly distinguishes between the Normandy beaches and ports, usable in the days following the Landings (such as Cherbourg, though damaged), and those further afield (the Atlantic ports, notably those of the Gulf of Morbihan).

It was imperative for the Allies to consolidate the enormous logistical effort needed to defeat Germany on all theatres of operations, and the ports were a key element of this.

The work presents the various means deployed: prefabricated ports, Operation Chastity, port logistics, road and rail logistics, from Normandy to the Eastern Front and the fall of Berlin.
