During the Second World War, the German high command suspected that sooner or later the Allied forces would attempt a return to the European continent through an amphibious landing. This is why the construction of thousands of concrete fortifications was ordered, from the Basque coast to Norway, in order to repel that assault.

In addition to this, the Germans wanted a mobile armoured force capable of driving the enemy back into the sea. The German armoured divisions (Panzerdivisionen) were positioned behind this defensive screen within a few hours' drive of the coast. On 6 June 1944, the Allied armies, comprising thousands of men and vehicles, landed in Normandy.

Facing this armada, the Germans had at closest range three armoured divisions. The 21. Panzer-Division was one of them. Apart from already being deployed in the sector, it had the distinctive feature of being equipped largely with captured materiel, notably French armoured vehicles and half-tracks seized at the start of the war. The testimonies in this volume come from around ten men who belonged to this unit or were amalgamated into it. They shed further light on the three months these soldiers would live through in Normandy.
