The Franco-British intervention at Narvik, in Norway, in May 1940, passed relatively unnoticed because, at that very moment, Germany was launching its victorious offensive against France. History, for this reason, retains little memory of these battles, which took place beyond the Arctic Circle.

By examining these battles in detail, François Gatineau reveals their full scale and complexity. He shows that this diversionary operation in Norway — a copy of an operation conceived some months earlier to come to the aid of the Finns attacked by the Russians — had major political consequences both in France and in England (the resignation of both governments within 24 hours of each other), and that the fighting of this expeditionary force at Narvik to cut the " iron route " to the Nazis cannot be described as a military " fiasco ", as has so often been written.

An aviator and historian, François Gatineau has published Les trois jours qui ont fait tomber la France (L'Artilleur, 2023).
