Women in the Service of France - 1939-1940
Drawing on the experience of the Great War, women supported by militant feminists undertook a reflection on the role of women in wartime.
Studies and initiatives were numerous and covered every field: the Air Force, the Army, support for soldiers, air first aid, parachuting... Before long, the "drôle de guerre" put an end to these promising deliberations in favour of a policy grounded in reality. From then on, women were everywhere — at the rear, but also at the front.
This work presents the many women's formations created between the 1920s and June 1940: the assistants of the Devoir national, the women's auxiliary corps of the aeronautics service, the teams of female drivers and chemists of the National Defence, the legion of foreign women volunteers in France, and the drivers of the women's motorised sections who, in June 1940, would actively take part in the fighting.
