For nearly 150 years, on 14 July, the French army has paraded through Paris — yet the history of this ceremony, followed each year by millions of French people, has never before been told. Drawing on more than 300 rare or unpublished photographs and a wealth of archival sources, Christian Benoit analyses this event, which symbolises the bond between the army and the Nation.

It is thus a fascinating reflection of the evolution of French society: from the first parades preparing the Revanche against Germany to the grand Victory Parade on 14 July 1919, from the firefighters of the World Trade Center to the music of Daft Punk, from colonial troops at the beginning of the twentieth century to female Allied units marching in 1945, this military parade offers a fresh perspective on the history of France.
