THE RICE PADDIES OF SUFFERING – French Combatants in Indochina (1945–1954)
From 1945 to 1954, thousands of young Frenchmen embarked for Indochina. Most of them enlisted in the conflict not to "bash Vietnamese", as has too often been claimed, but for economic reasons: finding work in a country devastated by the Second World War was extremely difficult at the time.
Through an investigation drawing on the moving testimonies of numerous soldiers, the author immerses us in the daily lives of these men, who discovered an extremely violent Vietnam: the horror of confrontation with the fearsome Indochinese fighters, the internment camps where hundreds of French prisoners died in abominable conditions, and also the sheer folly of the politicians in charge of the problem.
Seventy years on, we also relive, in the finest detail, the tragic battle of Diên Biên Phu, which claimed the lives of many combatants of the besieged French army…
With Les Rizières de la souffrance, Raphaël Delpard once again establishes himself as one of the finest narrators of twentieth-century history.
