Their war lasted fifteen years, from the banks of the Rhine or the Oder in 1940 to the basin of Diên Biên Phu in 1954. French soldiers who had broken with Vichy or heroes of the Free French, soldiers of the Wehrmacht or from the eastern marches of Europe, a generation ground down by a world conflict, they carved out an adventure as one plays a final card. Far from being paper heroes or cinema heroes, they are captured here in the daily reality of a war of skirmishes, raids and pursuits — sometimes squalid, sometimes glorious, always beginning anew.

From Leclerc's arrival to the disaster at Cao Bang in 1950, from new strategies to last-chance operations all the way to Diên Biên Phu, we see these men tracking Hô Chi Minh's armoured train, falling back on reflexes from 1941, infiltrating a bewildered population, surrendering to the fascination of Vietnam and leaving a part of their souls there.

The author, Paul Bonnecarrère, was a war correspondent in Indochina, Suez and Algeria.
