Napoleon's secret wars. This original book renews our understanding of intelligence during the Napoleonic era by placing it within its European and transnational dimension rather than a strictly national one. Many espionage and terrorism affairs traditionally studied separately, each yielding their own particular explanations, are thus presented in a new light.

Across 14 chapters, Gérard Arboit offers new research perspectives in Intelligence Studies as well as in Napoleonic studies. He sheds new light on the coup d'état of 1799, terrorism, electoral manipulation in Great Britain, special operations and even economic intelligence. He also illuminates the Spanish failure by highlighting its singular approach to the acquisition of military intelligence, and brings to light in the process the betrayals of Fouché and Talleyrand.

It also opens up research avenues hitherto ignored or shrouded in certainties, such as the affairs of the Orient and South America. Finally, the work reveals the Emperor's unsuspected appetite for intelligence gathering right up to the last moments of his reign and into exile. A fresh perspective on the Imperial period, uncovering the networks that underpinned it.
