This previously unpublished work invites you on a tour as exhaustive as possible of the evolution of the uniform and equipment of the German soldier between August 1914 and the end of 1916. Thanks to the adoption of Feldgrau cloth as early as 1907, the German army was assuredly better adapted to modern warfare than its adversary on the other side of the Rhine. Yet it also retained elements of archaism, such as the famous spiked helmet dating from the 1840s.

In this respect, the period 1914-1916 proves particularly interesting, as it was a transitional phase before the emergence of a German fighting man whose silhouette would not be without foreshadowing that of the Landser of 1940.
