Two hundred years after his death, Napoleon remains very much alive in the memory of mankind. At Saint Helena, between 1815 and 1821, during the six years of his captivity, the emperor, who had filled the world with admiration and dread, took refuge in the past. He spent his days retracing the deeds and gestures of his military and political life, convinced that his glory would endure through the centuries. In dictating his Memoirs, he also sought to justify himself in the eyes of posterity. He thus appealed to History, which he regarded as the only true philosophy worthy of being read and meditated upon, to win his wager on immortality.
