Unpublished correspondence of soldiers and officers of the First Empire held at the Service historique de la Défense (1794–1815)

The history of the Grande Armée is a matter of scale. While the exploits of its commanders-in-chief have engaged numerous historians over two centuries, the growing interest in the daily lives of its soldiers reflects a historiographical renewal. With the spread of literacy and the beginnings of mass warfare, never had so many soldiers corresponded so extensively as during the wars of the Revolution and the Empire.

Their correspondence represents a primary source that offers a different perspective on these men who traversed Europe. To better understand the daily life of the grognard and glimpse his inner world, the editors of this collection drew on the holdings of the Service historique de la Défense to make available to readers more than four hundred letters from some twenty military men of all ranks.
