Memoirs of Claude Monnot 1800–1815 – Grenadier of the Imperial Guard
Account of Claude Monnot: enlisted as a Vélite, promoted to Grenadier of the Guard in 1806 and integrated into the Fusilier-Grenadiers in 1807.
Commandant Monnot lived through everything. Who can claim to have witnessed the Coronation at Notre-Dame in the ranks of the Imperial Guard, and then that of the newly crowned King of Italy receiving the crown of the Lombard kings in Milan? As a Vélite, he follows and takes part in the exploits of the Grande Armée at Ulm, recounts Austerlitz, enters Vienna and Munich before reaching Berlin.
It is with the Grenadiers of the Guard that he takes part in the Polish campaign, but with the Fusilier-Grenadiers of the Guard that he will serve in the Spanish campaign.
It is his journal that is reproduced here for the first time — that of his campaigns, but also of his life as a prisoner of the Russians.
