It is precisely the desperate struggle of General Partouneaux's 12th Infantry Division and the 30th Cavalry Brigade under General Delaitre — attached to it just days before the crossing of the Berezina — that this work reconstructs in its entirety, drawing on the testimonies of those who fought it with heroism.

Left to hold the rear guard of the Grande Armée alone against three Russian armies on the verge of linking up, this French division, exhausted and stripped of resources, was compelled to lay down its arms on the morning of 28 November 1812. In the face of such adversity, the by-then inevitable surrender of its last fighting men was met not only with public condemnation from Napoleon, but also with widespread criticism within the military establishment itself.

On their return from captivity, Partouneaux and Delaitre, those two brothers in arms, strove to clear their honour — besmirched in the 29th Bulletin and in the sometimes fanciful accounts of the great memoirists of the era, none of whom had shared their tragic fate. Only a handful of surviving witnesses were able to testify with objectivity and realism to the sacrifice the Emperor had imposed on them for the salvation of his army.
