In 57 BC, after repelling the Helvetii and the Germanic tribes, Julius Caesar gradually imposed the presence of his legions at the heart of Gaul.

Taking advantage of the divisions among the Gauls, he succeeded in forging alliances with certain tribes and made himself indispensable in these fratricidal struggles. The Battle of the Aisne is a major historical event of the Gallic Wars. It saw Julius Caesar and his allies, the Remi and the Aedui, pitted against a coalition of fifteen Belgian Gallic tribes.

Thanks to the author's research, this book also puts a definitive end to the controversy concerning the two main sites of this battle of the Aisne. The topographic description laid out in the pages of the Commentarii de Bello Gallico appeared sufficiently clear to precisely locate the Roman camp on the hill of Mauchamp and the Remi Gallic oppidum of Bibrax on the site known as "Vieux-Laon".
