Much ink has been spilled regarding the location of the flumen Sabis, near which the battle fought in 57 BC between Caesar's legions and the Belgian Gallic tribes (Nervii, Atrebates…) took place.
Michel Conreur proposes to locate the confrontation to the east of the small town of Thuin, a possible capital of the Nervian people. No formal proof definitively confirms this hypothesis which, it must nonetheless be admitted, agrees on many points with what we know of the battle. Whether on the steep slopes of the Sambre or of another watercourse, this work is an opportunity to evoke this battle in which Caesar had to fight for his life and only snatched victory in extremis thanks to the clear-headedness of his lieutenant Labienus and the courage of his legions.
Despite their defeat, Caesar would pay tribute to his formidable adversaries and their leader Boduognatus, who had resisted him with courage and honour.
