The author retraces this founding historical episode of the 1st French Republic.

It all begins with the flight of Louis XVI and the royal family, halted at Varennes-en-Argonne on 21 June 1791. The French would see in his failed attempt to leave France a flagrant collusion with foreign powers. Following bitter debate, during which each faction tried to play its hand, the National Assembly declared war on Austria and the 1st Coalition on 20 April 1792.

Disorganised and demoralised, our army first suffered several reverses in the Low Countries before confronting and defeating, thanks to two exceptional generals — Dumouriez and Kellermann — and to the soldiers of the former royal army, the finest regiments in Europe under the command of the Duke of Brunswick, their commander-in-chief.
