Initially hailed by the apologists of the Second Empire as the "greatest idea of the reign" of Emperor Napoleon III, the French army's expedition to Mexico ended, after several years of a gruelling and brutal campaign, in a humiliating withdrawal in 1867.
This unhappy episode, which marked the beginning of the regime's military decline, nonetheless leaves us with exotic images of a French army forced to adapt to a punishing climate and fight, across a vast country, against often elusive adversaries.
This new Carnet de La Sabretache does not set out to cover every aspect of the campaign, but rather to offer a panoramic view of it, supported by previously unpublished iconography drawn from the archives of the Service Historique de la Défense, the documentation of our authors, and the talent of Félix Meynet, illustrator of historical comic books.
