In January 1944, the Allies came up against the formidable Gustav Line, firmly held by German forces. To break the deadlock, they launched Operation Shingle: a bold amphibious landing at Anzio, intended to outflank the enemy defences and hasten their withdrawal. But the German reaction was immediate. Under Kesselring's direction, reinforcements poured in, supported by powerful armoured vehicles: Panther, Tiger and Ferdinand. Against them, General Lucas's caution stalled the offensive. Very quickly, in appalling weather conditions, the battle bogged down and took on the character of trench warfare, recalling the fighting of the First World War. Often overlooked, the Italian campaign was nonetheless one of the most gruelling of the conflict — a genuine testing ground ahead of the Normandy landings.
