The armies of five nations were present in Italy in 1943 — American, British, French, Polish and German — and their confrontation was one of the most brutal of the Second World War, both for the combatants and for the civilian population, who are never spoken of. Faced with the all-out resistance of the German forces on the Gustav Line south of Rome, the Allies found themselves unable to advance toward the Italian capital: "without the French Army of Africa, the Allies, held up before Cassino, would never have managed to break through the front". A glorious page of our military history was written there by those soldiers from North Africa — Algerians, Moroccans, Tunisians and their officers. Unfortunately, their heroic epic was deliberately suppressed after the war for petty political reasons.
This remarkably precise book tells the truth about these battles: the magnificent manoeuvres, the criminal errors, the great feats of arms, and on every page the courage and brotherhood of the combatants. It was therefore only right that the descendants of all these magnificent soldiers of the Italian campaign should know the truth. May this book contribute to that end.
