TANKS IN NORMANDY – Summer 1944, the Clash
Prepared in the utmost secrecy, Operation "Overlord" is one of the most audacious offensives of the Second World War:
tens of thousands of soldiers had to be ferried across the English Channel, landed on beaches defended by the Germans and the enemy had to be prevented from halting the offensive. And one particular weapon had been gaining ever-greater importance since Nazi Germany's annexation of Poland: the tank.
The operations in Normandy confirmed the pre-eminent place of armour, which became the means of creating and exploiting a breakthrough for the Allies, while being seen by the opposing side as a weapon capable of turning the tide.
Through numerous operational examples (including "Bluecoat", "Cobra" and "Lüttich"), Franck Segrétain successfully revisits the use of the tank during the Battle of Normandy, while presenting the units engaged (130. Panzer-Lehr-Division, 2nd Armored Division…) and the generals involved.
Thus, the tank was a major tool in the success of the Allied operations in Normandy, and its use was not confined solely to exceptional commanders such as Rose or Roberts. For their part, the Germans fielded Panzers that were often superior to their opponents, but Allied air superiority would work against them…
