Germany has had fast attack craft in its fleet since 1917, but it was above all during the Second World War that the Kriegsmarine put this naval asset to use. Having developed several modern versions of torpedo boats during the interwar period, it entered the conflict with a distinct advantage for coastal "small war", though the number of available units was then very limited. Over the course of the conflict, the Schnellboote, or S-Boote, would become more reliable vessels, better armed, better protected, and crewed by seasoned sailors.
