The Nebeltruppen was conceived from 1929 as a specialised branch of the artillery tasked with developing, testing and deploying equipment, munitions and doctrine in the fields of chemical warfare and artificial smoke screens. Becoming an autonomous arm in 1936, it constituted from 1940 and throughout the Second World War a highly effective instrument, with strong growth in its manpower driven by improvements in the performance and tactical use of its innovative and emblematic equipment: the rocket launchers.
This volume offers the reader a detailed presentation of the uniforms, headgear and insignia of the Nebeltruppen between 1934 and 1945, set in context through an account of unit organisation and the evolution of their combat deployment across various theatres of operations over more than five years.
A selection of period photographs and documents, presented chronologically, evokes the careers of the men who served in this arm, which had no equivalent at the time.
