Only a part of the history of secret agents parachuted into Europe during World War II is known today — that of the clandestine agents of the SOE, the BCRA or the Abwehr.

Drawing on destinies that have remained in the shadows until now, Gaston Erlom recounts a few successes and several tragedies of this struggle. But most of the parachute drops into occupied or freshly liberated Europe remain entirely unknown, such as those of Soviet or Nazi agents.

The author also evokes them and draws parallels with many other infiltrations of parachuted agents into Finland, Germany, Yugoslavia and elsewhere.

The second half of the book surprises with revelations about agents parachuted behind the Iron Curtain during the Cold War, at the very beginning of the 1950s.

Using photographs and documents that are for the most part previously unpublished, the author brings to life their recruitment, their training and, for many of them, their parachute drop — rapidly followed by arrest, trial and a death sentence. Betrayal, bad luck, amateurism and rivalries combined to make of all these destinies an odyssey worthy of the finest thrillers.
