In the early hours of 6 June 1944, under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Terence Otway, the paratroopers of the 9th Battalion and the sappers of the 591st Squadron Royal Engineers of the British 6th Airborne Division were tasked with capturing the Merville Battery and neutralising its guns.

This force, reduced to 150 men and deprived of heavy weapons, was to accomplish one of the most desperate and heroic feats of arms of D-Day.

The author, who had access to the entire collections of the Merville Battery Museum, describes with rigour the objectives, the preparation and the conduct of the assault on the battery on 6 June, the renewed assault on 7 June by No. 3 Commando, the continuation of the 9th Battalion's mission, and the capture of the battery in August 1944 during Operation Paddle.

Photographs, testimonies from British and German combatants, and artefacts draw the reader into the heart of the events and allow them to grasp what the fighters experienced during those tragic days.
