The battle of the Vexin — both Île-de-France and Norman — on either side of the Epte between the American bridgehead at Mantes and the British one at Vernon is recounted in this work. Between Vernon and Vetheuil, by way of Giverny, where the Impressionist painters had made their mark a few decades earlier.
In mid-August 1944, following the Normandy breakout and Patton's thrust to the Seine at Mantes, the Germans relocated their headquarters. Field Marshal Montgomery arrived shortly afterwards at Vernon to launch the British bridgehead. But the enemy massed reinforcements on the north bank of the river, and a week of fighting ensued that left hundreds of casualties in both the German and British ranks.
