FROM THE IS-1 TO THE T-10 - THE STALIN TANK FAMILY 1943-1997
In 1942, the German introduction of the Panzer VI Ausf. E Tiger rendered the KV heavy tanks brutally obsolete, completely outclassed in terms of firepower. The Soviets then embarked on an arms race that gave birth to the famous IS‑2, equipped with a 122 mm gun, and a range of powerful self-propelled guns. But while this vehicle is the most celebrated member of the "Stalin" family, it is far from being the last, since towards the very end of the conflict the IS‑3 and IS‑4 were launched.
Heavy tanks held an important place in the Soviet arsenal, for throughout the entire Cold War numerous new models were studied. If only one was produced in series — the IS‑8, renamed the T‑10 due to de-Stalinisation — the many concepts conceived sometimes resulted in running prototypes, some of which were out of the ordinary, like the Objekt 279 with its running gear made up of 4 tracks!
Discover all these heavy armoured vehicles and their self-propelled variants in this richly illustrated work featuring photographs, plans, profiles and 3D views.
