These detachments were tasked with spreading a new tactical doctrine that decisively transformed the fighting methods of the German army. But well before this, another type of troops had been created within the German infantry during the winter of 1914–1915: the shock troops (Stosstruppen), infantry groups that were never officially recognised as such and never belonged to a permanent unit, yet remained active until the end of the war and contributed to improving the offensive capability of the German infantry.
This book is a narrative history of the assault troops and covers their combat methods. It offers a comprehensive description of their uniforms, equipment and weapons, with a large number of rarely seen period illustrations and photographs.
