This book recounts the course of the Great War on the Picard plateau from 1914 to 1918. After the opening weeks of fighting during which the German army appeared in the Oise, the front stabilised and the Picard plateau found itself in the immediate rear of the French lines. In early 1917, the Germans withdrew as part of Operation Alberich, but with Operation Michael, in March–April 1918, they broke through the front and the war came to the plateau. It reached its climax with the Battle of the Matz in June 1918, one of the last two major German offensives. The period of reconquest followed in August 1918. The work is illustrated with a great many period photographs.
