The Hartmannswillerkopf is a major site of the Great War. This vantage point, whose slopes drop down into the Alsace plain, was in 1915 the scene of bitter fighting between French and German forces. Its bloody memory haunted the survivors.

Among the French units engaged at the Hartmann, the 152nd Infantry Regiment distinguished itself by the sacrifices it made there. Victorious in the offensive of 21 December 1915, it was entirely annihilated the following day. Auguste Chapatte is one of these poilus of the 15-2 who recaptured the mountain summit from the enemy twice. His memoirs, marked by camaraderie and esprit de corps, bear witness to the moral climate of France in 1914, the state of mind of veterans in the 1930s, and the tragedy that was the Great War.
