Following the definitive failure of the German offensive at Verdun in July 1916, the French prepared with great meticulousness to retake the lost ground in the autumn of 1916. The offensive began in October 1916 and led to the immediate recapture of Fort Douaumont. The recapture of Fort Vaux had to wait until December. Thus, nearly all the ground lost on the right bank of the Meuse since February 1916 was reconquered.
