In 1812, as Napoleon's Grande Armée enters Russian territory, another war ignites in North America. It pits the United States of America against their former metropolis, England.

Hostilities begin with an American invasion of the British province of Upper Canada. The British response, allied with the Indians, is crushing. Land battles continue around the Great Lakes, then along the East Coast and in the South, while at sea the young US Navy challenges the prestigious Royal Navy.

On 8 January 1815, at New Orleans, the Americans win a great land victory, after a peace entrenching the status quo ante bellum had been signed at Ghent between the belligerents. More than the first war of 1775–1783, it is this later and far less well-known conflict that is the true matrix of future American power. Never again would a European nation be in a position to impose its will on the United States by force of arms.

This book, the first written in French on the subject, traces all the political and military phases of this decisive war, eclipsed at the time by the conflict engulfing Europe.
