On 19 July 1870, Napoleon III fell into Bismarck's trap and declared war on Prussia. In a state of exaltation, seasoned soldiers and young recruits alike headed towards the eastern frontiers. No one could then imagine the catastrophe awaiting France. Defeated on its own territory, the country would lose Alsace and northern Lorraine before settling into a logic of enduring confrontation with Germany.

In their writings, the soldiers bore witness to their war. From mobilisation to the Battle of Sedan, through their day-by-day accounts, the full reality of the summer 1870 campaign is revealed. Far removed from the legends constructed after the fact, the combatants recount the fighting, which gave rise to both cruelty and compassion, to stupefaction before battles transformed by new weapons in which heroism alone could not force victory.

This book is intended for those who wish to gain a sense of the War of 1870 as it was experienced by the combatants. Their testimonies have a universal quality, for it is true that in the face of lethal fire the impressions of soldiers always resemble one another.
