In July 2020, the country commemorated the 150th anniversary of the outbreak of the War of 1870, which from 18 July 1870 to 28 January 1871 pitted France against a German coalition led by Bismarck's Prussia.

Declared for a reason rooted in the Ancien Régime, this conflict is characterised militarily by extremely bloody battles that foreshadow those of the summer of 1914, and politically by upheavals that resulted in the rise of a Republic and an Empire resolutely hostile to one another.

How did the French — combatants and civilians alike — experience this conflict, of whose extreme violence and political implications nothing gave any forewarning? Circumstances reveal peoples as much as individuals.

By analysing the testimonies of French soldiers and civilians, the author has conducted an inquiry that reveals their feelings during and after the conflict of 1870. His book explains the facts through the writings of contemporaries and ranks among the finest syntheses on the subject.
