NOTEBOOK FROM THE WAR OF 1870-1871 - TESTIMONY OF A SOLDIER
First-hand accounts of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–1871 are both rare and highly sought after. They allow us to enter into the intimate reality of a little-known conflict that nonetheless constitutes a pivotal, transitional moment between the heroic epic of Napoleon's Grande Armée and the terrible carnage of 1914–1918.
For the first time in history, devastating firepower was expected to bring about a swift decision. Marking the 150th anniversary of the outbreak of this conflict, this work, enriched with a wealth of iconography, presents the previously unpublished testimony of an ordinary soldier, a member of a battalion of chasseurs à pied.
His account invites us to discover from the inside the siege of Strasbourg (August–September 1870), at the end of which he is taken prisoner. There begins for him a long period of captivity in Germany, whose day-by-day narrative offers the reader an original perspective on a country in the throes of upheaval.
