On the morning of 4 August 1870, the 2nd division of General Abel Douay was positioned on the heights of Wissembourg, a few hundred metres from the enemy frontier. On the other side, several Prussian and Bavarian corps were advancing without having been detected by the French cavalry reconnaissance. An unequal battle was engaged in and around the town, in the course of which General Douay was killed. The Battle of Wissembourg ended with a heroic defence at the Château de Geisberg. Despite the bravery of the line infantry and the tirailleurs algériens, the French were forced to retreat towards the Col du Pigeonnier, leaving half their strength on the battlefield. Wissembourg was the first battle of the War of 1870. Drawing on research in French and German archives and rare works, Ronald Zins, a recognised specialist of the Second Empire, offers a compelling synthesis of this event.
