« Military authorities [believed] that Communist troops would be incapable of taking Dien Bien Phu. Giap's soldiers came and it was a horror, with a tragic end beneath shellfire and torrential rain. The men waded through mud, blood, urine, excrement, rats and pestilential odours. The wounded were operated on in the midst of this charnel house, with no protection whatsoever. Many collapsed from exhaustion or were laid in trenches directly on the ground, sometimes buried alive as in the First World War.

On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the end of the Indochina War, the author brings to life — through previously unpublished accounts — three figures who lived through the fall of the fortified camp at Diên Biên Phù, after 56 days of siege by Viet Minh troops.
