DIEN BIEN PHU 1954

Around 8,000 Viet Minh soldiers were killed, along with 2,293 soldiers of the French army, which also lost 11,721 prisoners, of whom only 3,290 would return from the prison camps. The fortified camp at Điện Biên Phủ could not withstand the assaults of General Giap's Viet Minh army. This decisive defeat sounded the death knell for the French presence in Indochina. In July 1954, following the Geneva Accords, Vietnam was divided in two and the French withdrew from Tonkin, which had become North Vietnam.
A chapter is dedicated to visiting the war remnants of the battle.
